Back up or restore a single map

All guides

Alongside the automatic version history, you can save a complete backup file of a single map to your own computer — every level, landmark, group, style and setting in one file. It's the safest thing to do before a big change, and it lets you move a map's contents around or keep an off-Mapvera copy. The Backup tab holds both download and restore.

Download a full backup

  1. Open your map in the editor

Go to map.au, sign in, and open the map.

  2. Go to the Backup tab

Choose the Backup tab, then open the Backup & restore section (it's open by default).

  3. Download the backup

Click ⬇ Download full backup. A JSON file saves to your computer, named after the map's slug. Keep it somewhere safe.

Do this before any big change — a backup you took two minutes ago is the quickest way to undo a mess.

Restore from a backup

Restoring replaces the entire map — levels, landmarks, groups, styles and settings — with the file's contents. It only takes effect once you Save & Publish, so you can always review first.
  1. Open Backup & restore

On the Backup tab, in the Backup & restore section, click ⬆ Restore from backup… and choose a backup file you saved earlier.

  2. Confirm the replace

You'll be asked to confirm, because a restore replaces the whole current map. If the file isn't valid or doesn't look like a map backup, the restore is cancelled and your current map is left untouched.

  3. Review, then Save & Publish

The backup loads into the editor so you can review it. Nothing is saved until you click Save & Publish — do that to accept the restore, or navigate away to discard it.

Just the landmarks? Use CSV

If you only need to back up or move the landmarks (not the whole map), the CSV tools are lighter and open in a spreadsheet.

  1. Download a landmark backup

On the CSV tab, click ⬇ Download backup to save every landmark — with all its fields — as a CSV.

  2. Bring landmarks back in

Paste a CSV (or load a file) and choose how to apply it: Add (append), Update / add by ID, or Replace all. Download example shows every supported column.

Backup files vs version history

A downloaded backup is a copy on your computer that you manage yourself. Separately, Mapvera keeps an automatic version history: every Save & Publish is stored, and you can compare versions and roll back — or recover a deleted map — from the Version history section on this same tab, or from the Map Archive. See Restore a map or roll back a version.
