Use a slower speed for step-free routes

The Accessible speed field sets the slower pace used to estimate time when a visitor is in step-free (wheelchair) mode.

The Accessible speed (m/s) field sets the pace used to work out the estimated time when a visitor has directions in step-free (wheelchair) mode.

Why a separate speed

A step-free route is usually walked or rolled more slowly than a direct one, and it often takes a longer way around stairs. Using your normal Walking speed for it would give an over-optimistic time. This field lets step-free estimates use a slower, more realistic pace. A common value is 0.8 m/s.

Set it up

  1. Enable step-free first

    This field only has an effect when step-free is turned on.

    See Turn on the step-free (accessibility) option.

  2. Open Walk time & distance

    In the Wayfinding tab, find Accessible speed (m/s) in the Walk time & distance section, next to Walking speed.

  3. Enter a slower pace

    Type a value in metres per second, for example 0.8. Leave it blank and step-free estimates fall back to your normal walking speed.

Only the estimated minutes change with this field. The distance and the route itself are the same. For the full picture see How estimated walking time is worked out.
